Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Sean C — 05 Jul 2011
From start to finish, I was convinced there existed a better film in this material than the one that ended up being made. Sure it's dull. I can stomach slow movies, especially when that restraint has a purpose to it.
But more time in the movie seems spent contemplating unasked questions than the very real ones the film does present both in its first half-hour and its haunting final march. In the interim, we get to watch a group of habitually dull human beings go about their business as usual in an isolated monastery.
It's not exactly riveting stuff, especially given more than 1500 years of material to work from.
