Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Rob L — 21 Aug 2011
A beautifully constructed movie, this film excels in its several tableaux - the consumption of red wine, Last Supper style to the strains of Tchaikovsky, the respectful meeting of an intellectual Christian brother and a committed Islamist, and the self-analyzing trudge of the former through the bleak landscapes of the Atlas. Filmed in Morocco, the film depicts the threat to foreigners provided by Algeria's fundamentalist rebels and neither they nor the opportunistic, secular, but venal ruling power come out of this well - indeed there is still debate and uncertainty as to which faction is guilty of the crimes committed.
It will be too holy and too convinced of the monks' goodness for some and it's not rapid of pace, but the thoughtfulness allied to the gripping storyline and refusal to make easy compromises impressed me greatly. One to savour.
