Review of Oculus (2014) by Jamie W — 06 Aug 2014
This horror gem unravels in fragments as present and past intertwine, and occasionally collide with each other. It isn't a straight forward kind of horror flick, playing it slow whilst muddying the plot with a delightfully confusing back and forth, often leaving me anticipating one direction while being completely misled.
The leads in this chilling story (both the adults and the children meant to play the protagonists in their youth) offer effective performance, offered solid support from all the characters brought into the chaos.
Still, the devilishly original approach aside, this film's biggest flaws come from what it borrows from other genre entries, the most blatant being the sequel to the Blair Witch Project. There are a couple of minor moments when the flash back seemed to come at the most awkward of times.
That said, Oculus delivers on chills. It is an entertaining viewing experience.
