A lot of it was scary. Gillan's American accent is believable, and her acting pretty good. It was easy to believe such horror was able to come from such a ghastly "antique". A lot of it is intentionally confusing, so by the end of the film we know less about what's going on than more.
A horror film made 100% for the scares and mind-bends, and if that's your thing you'll have a good time.
