Review of Oculus (2014) by Nick W — 23 Nov 2015
This is maybe the most underrated movie this decade. First of all, it suffers from the fact that like many horror movies today, it was completely mismarketed as a cut-and-dry horror movie that's going to have monsters going bump and the night and chasing girls around in their pajamas.
Actually, Oculus is one of the most psychologically complex horror movies that I've ever seen. It starts out as simple as can be, with a malevolent mirror that needs to be destroyed, and quickly turns into a psychological battle that blends timelines between multiple stories. The movie tackles issues surrounding depression, family and paranoia, and it's a movie that can have a lasting effect if you give it the time and attention it deserves.
