Review of October Sky (1999) by Jonathon C — 17 Apr 2009
An absolutely adorable film. One that sums up the usual story of boys being boys, having a little bit of reckless youthful fun; but these boys go that one step further making an art form of it, harnessing their enthusiasm with their intelligence and some encouragement from a wonderful (adorable) high school teacher. It is a wonderful coming of age story of a youth on the verge of manhood wrestling with the expectations of his father and conformity to the status quo of small town syndrome versus his free spirited ambition to be all that he can be, while being different and misunderstood in his quest to stay true to himself and the desires of his heart.
The characters are strong and well acted, really allowing you to warm to them, just as the story is a pleasant one of warmth and good clean fun.
As far as feel-good films go this one is easily my favourite.
