Review of October Sky (1999) by Jose M — 15 Mar 2010
Quite possibly one of the most inspiring movies I've ever seen, with one of the most touching endings I've ever come across, this is one of the only films that has ever moved me to tears. Chris Cooper's supporting role here is definitely the best work he has ever done; and in spite of his character's foibles and shortcomings, you cannot help but be moved by his performance, especially toward the end.
Jake Gyllenhaal and the rest of the cast are not stellar, but effective, and he shows streaks of the talent we've seen from him in his subsequent roles. This is a film that seeks to inspire, and does just that.
This is the one movie I come back to again and again when I lose sight of the things that matter the most in life, or when I feel toppled by adversity, and it always manages to lift my spirits. This is film making with meaning and purpose.
