Review of October Sky (1999) by Greg R — 05 Nov 2010
There are not enough superlatives in the English language to adequately celebrate the qualities of this movie. Director Joe Johnston handles this poetic examination of a teenage boy's unquenchable desire to cut his own path in life with a tenderness and affection for his subject.
Gyllenhaal is extraordinary as the younger son of a West Virginia coal miner, determined to escape the gravitational pull of the coal mine while desperately trying to earn his father's understanding and respect.
Chris Cooper shows he's one of the best actors working today with his gritty, totally genuine portrayal of John Hickam, the father struggling to come to terms with his son's maverick aspirations of a life far from the coal seams of Appalachia.
The supporting cast is universally outstanding, particularly Laura Dern as Homer's inspirational high school teacher. Mark Isham's score, rich in bluegrass-y fiddle solos, beautifully captures the spiritual essence of the film.
One of my top ten favorite films of all time.
