Review of October Sky (1999) by Ananthu M — 14 Oct 2012
"October Sky", from a plot standpoint, may not be the most original film of its decade. It comes from the same warm, character-driven formula that made films like "Hoosiers" and "Rudy" so successful, but it is oddly this same charming quality that makes "October Sky" such a gem.
What "Hoosiers" and "Rudy" did for sports, "October Sky" does for science and education; it celebrates a human accomplishment against all odds. It is this rare quality, in addition to a witty screenplay, an array of fine performances, sharp direction by Joe Johnston, and a heartbreaking score by Mark Isham that make "October Sky" one of the finest "Hollywood" dramas of the 90s.
That this film is actually based on a true story by NASA engineer Homer Hickam makes it even more valuable--you wouldn't trade it for a pot of gold.
