This movie works surprisingly well. My only knowledge of Joe Johnston's work was for his F/X summer popcorn movies (Jurassic Park 3, Jumanji) and if this was one of those it was sure to be terrible, and if it wasn't - did he have the ability to tell a story like this? The answer is most definitely yes.

The performances are solid, but some of the accents are a bit dodgy. Chris Cooper plays much the same role he always plays. Gyllenhaal and the other young actors all manage to create unique characters (thanks in part to good writing).

The movie manages to tap into memories of looking to the skies and marveling at the stars with a skill that rarely is seen. It evokes similar feelings to space as Field of Dreams or The Sandlot do for baseball, and the effect is powerful, moving, and well worth the time.
