Review of Ocean's Eleven (2001) by Troy F — 14 Sep 2013
Ocean's Eleven is a very smooth heist film with a terrific cast. Its setups are certainly great, it's funny, and it does what every heist film needs to do to succeed: always make you question how they'll get by obstacles and fool you into believing certain outcomes that result much differently and surprise you.
Unfortunately, I couldn't love this film for two reasons: 1) I saw this only recently. 2) Much more heist films have come out since clearly inspired this film. Oh and that leads to a #3: I saw this too damn late.
Yes, this is still a cool slick film, but with all the films I've seen with the same heist ordeal, Ocean's Eleven doesn't seem to stick out as much as it probably used to. It's aged itself, not in terms of the film's style, but the concept has now been done a lot.
In short, I would've had to see Ocean's Eleven much longer ago before the wave of copycats to appreciate it more. Still, as far as heist films go, Ocean's Eleven is one of the most enjoyable.
