Review of Ocean's Eight (2018) by Nick V — 09 Jun 2018
Glitz, glamour and grand larceny. What more could you ask for in a fluffy summer film stuffed with Oscar and Emmy Award winners like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and James Corden? This heist film, another in the series of Oceans capers, begins with Danny Ocean's sister, Debbie (Sandra Bullock) getting out of prison and immediately putting into motion preparations for stealing a valuable necklace from the annual Met Gala in New York. Let the hijinks commence!
I had a great time watching, as Debbie recruited her team and carried out her plan. A great sense of camaraderie develops and the scams and antics they run through are simply marvelous. There's nothing like getting one over on high society and the security forces. Then you add in a bit of spice with carrying out a revenge fantasy on the boyfriend who stiffed you, and you're right there cheering for the crew to succeed. Everything gets revealed layer upon layer, sweet and delicious like a seven layer cake.
I have to give a shout out to the casting and costuming for the Met Gala scenes. There are a number of cameos that got people in the audience whispering and the outfits for the guests and exhibit were stunning. There are some very appropriate pieces of old music used in the film that made me smile and really set the mood.
Go see this film and enjoy the ride. Just make sure you still have everything on you when you leave the theater.
