Review of Obsession (1943) by Mathieu C — 08 Jun 2007
Not only the first Italian Neo-realist film but also the greatest adaptation of "The Postman Always Rings Twice". I have always felt that this film is also one of the essential studies of lust.
At first the drifter and the wife give in to it, then try to reject it but ultimately can't. It then leads them to horrible consequences. Raymond Chandler condemned the material for having no moral center, but this means that the film is not limited by that point of view and can show the events in a more unrestrained way.
Powerful film.
