Review of Observe and Report (2009) by Ryan J — 02 Sep 2010
I read a review of this movie when it first came out and the line that stuck in head was; "This movie proves once and for all that Seth Rogen is not funny". Now I have always liked Seth Rogan but with that review in mind and to be fair because the trailers didn't look funny at all I decided not to watch it. While baby sitting the in-laws dog the wife decided she wanted to watch this instead of the slasher film I fancied so I finally watched Observe and Report... wish I hadn't.
The gags are not funny, the plot is stupid and the scrip sounds like it was still a work in progress while they were filming. None of the cast stand out and Ray Liotta needs to kick his agent in the teeth for putting him in this film. I laughed twice in the entire movie which was 1hr 26 mins too long. Anna Faris (Scream, Brokeback Mountain) played her usual loud and dim comedy persona but she was far from the worst person in this abortion of a comedy. Written and directed by TV driector Jody Hill who had such little pace control over the story that even if it had been funny it would have annoyed you. It was just a mess oh my word it really was awful.
Now I guess that just leaves Mr Rogen... like I said I do like him but something did spring to mind after I watched this movie; Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin and Zach and Miri make a Porno probably the three movies that made Seth a big time player in the comedy world all had a fantastic cast of really funny actors in them. This movie was all on Rogans shoulders and he was not up to the task. This is a worry, have I been wrong? Is Seth Rogan not really funny? Is it the talent he has had around him in his other movies? I hope not and time will tell, it always does. Live With It is the next offer from Mr Rogan and lets hope he is as funny as I have always thought he is.
