Review of Objectified (2009) by Larry A — 08 Nov 2009
Not quite as good as Gary Hustwit's previous doc, "Helvetica." It needs a galvanizing figure like the font film had in mad German designer Erik Spikermann. And this study of the industrial designers behind everyday objects, from chairs to potato peelers to Apple iMacs, fails to take much of a stand on the rampant consumerism that fuels such design.
And it also lets stand the lack of soulfulness in many modern objects. But Hustwit proves that he has an eye for focusing on things we rarely think about, especially the larger implications of design on the future of life on the planet.
Really.
