Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Derek Schwartz D — 26 Feb 2011
A decent film, but I couldn't help but think how irrelevant it would be if this were a film about just an ordinary kid and not John Lennon. Not that the film was uninteresting, but the problem lies precisely what the filmmakers were trying to avoid: overexposure.
I know, I know...it's an independent film so they're not interested in any big scenes or hype and that's quite alright. Because of the downplayed tone, the movie rightfully plays just as if any coming-of-age movie would.
However, when you make a movie about one of the members of the most popular band ever, maybe the stakes should be higher. Thus, this final result of Nowhere Boy is confusing. Fundamentally, the atmosphere should feel grander, in my opinion.
It's not an example of poor film-making, just an example of poor conceptualization.
