Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Dana A — 27 Mar 2011
First off, Aaron Johnson is British!! When the hell did this happen?? I'm really baffled, he fooled me all these years. Secondly, he's an incredible actor, really understated how talented he is.
Thirdly was a remarkably wonderful film this was, I'm really surprised there wasn't a film already out there that explored the relationship of his mother and aunt, let alone the creation of The Beatles.
This was wonderfully acted, well cast and refreshing not to see the same rehashed film about The Beatles. Focusing on the love triangle John Lennon had between his mother and aunt. Aaron brought raw emotion to the character while being original.
Never once did this film feel like an impersonation. I will say while this was quite enjoyable, it had a setback. It was felt long and at times it dragged. The dialogue could have been shortened and scenes could have been omitted but trying to balance, John Lennon's transformation to boyhood to manhood, the creation of The Beatles and the love triangle between his mother and aunt there isn't always going to be a smooth transition.
Overall one can over look this small flaw and easily become involved in the sad yet poignant time in John Lennon's life.
