Review of Notting Hill (1999) by Francesca M — 06 Jun 2010
This is one of those films I can just watch again and again, even though it hasn't made it onto my Desert Island Films List. I love the script, the storyline, the humour, the acting, the characters. I especially love all the scenes with chirpy idiotic Welshman Spike. It's funny and romantic without being corny - well, not too much!
Hugh Grant, naturally, plays Hugh Grant. The fact that he owns a bookshop in Notting Hill and plays a character with a different name does not stop him from playing the same character he plays in absolutely everything else I've seen him in.
Julia Roberts does an OK job as an A-list Hollywood actress who happens to fall in love with 'Hugh' (aka William) while filming in London. She still comes across as Julia Roberts though.
But the rest of the cast that play Hugh's friends and his sister, are absolutely wonderful, and they all have the best lines too. It's definitely worth watching!
