Review of Notes on a Scandal (2006) by Nick O — 12 Aug 2008
A dreamlike, austere drama. Its cinematography, acting style, chronology, and film style are extremely reminiscent of "The Illusionist," only sans special effects. The characters' dynamics are used extremely effectively and the individual performances are unfailingly appropriate and strong.
The disturbing subject matter is flatly addressed and fairly addressed. Judi Dench's enigmatic and intriguing character buoys a great cast's intricate web of deception and, if you'll pardon my poor choice of words, scandal.
