Review of Notes on a Scandal (2006) by Cancelled U — 17 May 2010
Wow! what a great thriller/drama. Notes on scandal isn't your typical drama Oscar movie that sometimes exaggerate them self, it has some thriller in it, seduction, erotic intuition that makes the whole package turn into a rare movie to watch.
The main character here is Judi Dench, who stars as a veteran high school teacher who is isolated, complex old women who seek for 'companion' from the young beautiful teacher Cate Blanchett. The movie starts out showing us the loneliness of Judi Dench, and later the relationship between Cate and her older husband, played by Bill Nighy and her children, one suffer from Down's Syndrome. The movie reaches it's climax, when Judi caught Cate giving oral sex to a 15 - years old boy, and plan to take advantage of the taboo situation for her personal agenda.
The movie is somehow creepy, mysterious and erotic at the same point. The movie goes by scene after scenes being narrated by Judi Dench, as supposed how she writes in her personal journal. Dame Judi Dench is beyond marvelous in this one, she plays the conservative Barbara in such a way, that it's haunting. Same goes to Cate Blanchett, playing the perfect mother, wife, not-so-innocent women having sex with 15 years old boy in an excellent manner. There is a scene at the end of the movie, where Cate finds out about the true motive of Judi and blows up, excellent acting and should be seen by many movie goers.
Truly, a remarkable movie! reminds me a bit of recent Kate Winslet's 'The Reader', but it's different and yet, poignant.
