Review of Notes on a Scandal (2006) by Matthew B — 31 Aug 2010
Richard Eyre's leeringly comical tale of obsession is brilliantly completed by the two magnificent central performances. Dame Judi Dench's Barbara Covett ranks among the most gloriously nasty of cinematic creations; her vitriolic narration is both appalling and sneeringly hilarious.
Cate Blanchett, too, delivers a performance for the ages as the feckless Sheba Hart; her explosive confrontation with Dench and the paparazzi in the film's finale is operatically intense. Bill Nighy shines during his pivotal meltdown.
Philip Glass's atmospherically maundering score fully captures Covett's venomous and possessive personality. A dramatic powerhouse for two acting titans.
