Review of Not of This Earth (1988) by Syd L — 25 Jun 2010
Traci Lords first non-porn role might as well have been a porno; the film features comparable bad acting, bad special effects, and bad storylines to the more ambitious porn movies of the 80s. The score is flatout embarrassing. And hell, you can even see the boom mic in some shots. The only thing missing is, uh, the sex.
Not Of This Earth would actually work BETTER as porn, because the dull plot would be condensed and separated into manageable doses between graphic depictions of sex.
In the movie's defense, it was shot on a dare. Director Jim Wynorski bet producer Roger Corman that he could remake the latter's 1957 movie on the same budget, adjusted for inflation. So if the movie looks and feels like a porno, it's only because it was done on the same budget. And it was shot on video. And it starred a scandal-ridden former porn star.
When he's not taking retarded bets for his own amusement, Wynorski can do slightly better. I like his 1986 film Chopping Mall a lot more for two reasons. First of all, stuff that isn't boring happens. Secondly, murderous mall security robots!
