Review of Nosferatu (1922) by Ryan H — 10 Nov 2009
From a guy that wants to be a filmmaker, this rating must seem pretty odd. However, I was very bored with this film. Only 60 minutes long and I couldn't even watch it in one sitting. The scene on the ship and showing him staring into her window were the only really atmospheric and haunting scenes.
I do feel that Murnau intended this to be more along the lines of Masque of the Red Death rather than a direct adaptation of Dracula. Of course, I have never read Dracula, but this movie had so many references to the black plague.
First of all, Dracula's teeth are more like a rodent's teeth. His overall characteristics are those of a rat. This makes sense why everyone dies when he comes into town. It also shows why they would be afraid of the bite marks that look like rats.
However, they directly talk about the black plague in the film, so it almost takes away that entire theory. Maybe he was just trying to make the first vampire film? If that's the case, then this movie is really terrible.
Innovative, but still terrible.
