Review of Nosferatu (1922) by Janson J — 25 Oct 2011
Maybe I've watched too many MST3K episodes that I look for really funny and odd things in old movies or I just haven't learned to appreciate silent film but I found Nosferatu pretty underwhelming yet amusing.
I can definitely see that for the time it was revolutionary and some of the visuals are very creepily put together (the shot of him rising from the coffin is iconic after all). I get that due to it being silent film actors and actresses had to be more emotive with their mannerisms and expressions but to someone not used to it, it just seems over the top.
(And no sound or dialogue doesn't mean that automatically. I'm a big fan of 3-iron) The soundtrack also seemed out of place because I think it was a modern recording and sounded almost like a casio keyboard being used instead of an old creepy organ, which would've been more fitting.
I do recommend seeing it once (like I would any other classic film regardless of it being enjoyable or not) for the cultural references and to be able to answer those Jeopardy questions. It's only 80 mins after all.
