Review of Nosferatu (1922) by Philip Z — 23 Oct 2013
Nobody does creepy like silent film star Max Schreck. Nobody. His performance in this film is bone chilling. I also love F.W. Murnau's atmospheric directorial choices. So, why am I giving this film a 6? Well, I always rate subjectively which may baffle some of you, but hopefully not all of you.
It's a film that I admire more than I enjoy. This isn't something that I would choose to see on a whim, it's not one of my favorite films, and there are still things about it that I think haven't aged well.
Is that the fault of the filmmakers? No, they did the best they could with the technology that they had, and what Murnau and his crew do to get around technical setbacks is remarkable and a real lesson to anyone seeking to make films their first films.
If you give this film more than a 6, I won't necessarily agree with you but I will more than likely readily understand where you are coming from.
