Review of Norwegian Wood (2010) by Chaeok A — 10 Apr 2011
Another flawed adaptation that nonetheless hits extraordinary heights. There are scenes, movements of the camera, that are among the greatest I have ever witnessed. Naoko running through the grass, Midori expressing her love for Watanabe, the panning up from the trees to the sky, I feel they will never leave me, ever.
It's too long since I read the book (or my literary memory is just generally too fragile) to make a comparison, but this did drag about two-thirds in, and I started to just get frustrated with Naoko's misery.
So, I didn't feel it succeeded in being more than a sum of its parts, but oh, what parts.
