Review of Norwegian Wood (2010) by Paul K — 01 Nov 2011
I should have read the novel. This is a faithful adaptation of it, which means that the film portrays what happened, without describing the context in the way that a book does. I found it hard to follow on screen, as it requires a Japanese sensibility to comprehend behaviours and their norms.
It's also very depressing: this is a story of nineteen-year-olds with problems. The music is somewhat too omnipresent - lots of soulful violin, with some electronic tweaking. With effort this film is worthwhile, but I don't think I really made enough effort.
