Review of Norwegian Wood (2010) by Christopher L — 11 Feb 2012
I left the theater feeling like I sat through 2.5h of depression. The film never connected the characters to the audience, instead I felt like a by standard, watching each character slowly undress their inner thoughts/feelings of sadness.
The film never grabs its audience and takes them with the story, instead the story sort of unfolds without any rhyme or reason. Sexuality is explored by all the characters, but does not result in anything poignant, just an off conversation or uncomfortable sex act.
All the characters share strong sexual tensions with one another, but the vessel never really makes a connection to the film. Instead, the film uses sexuality to mask the underlying issues that drive the characters.
However, there is a great takeaway, this film was wonderfully shot. And the music/costumes truly fit the times. Sadly, I was left hanging dry with blue balls.
