Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Al M — 21 Jun 2011
In North By Northwest, Hitchcock returns to familiar territory--the plot of mistaken identity or the wrong man. But, yet again, he carries it off perfectly as the film's mystery slowly deepens. A spectacular spy thriller/mystery film, North by Northwest features stellar performances from Cary Grant, James Mason, Eva Marie Saint, and even Martin landau.
The film also represents Hitchcock at his funniest, and Grant provides a superbly deadpan deliver of the film's typically Hitchcockian jokes. North by Northwest also contains some of Hitchcock's most iconic moments such as the cropduster attack and the final showdown on Mount Rushmore.
Exquisitely directed, well-acted, hilarious, and riveting, North by Northwest is Hitchcock at his finest--a classic of Cold War paranoia from the master of the mystery thriller.
