Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Guy G — 09 Jul 2011
[100/A+] An astonishingly sure-footed chase thriller, leavened with libido, comedy, and unforgettable setpieces, that reveals Hitchcock at the very top of his game. Perfectly sustained notes of cleverness, charm, eroticism, paranoia and threat run beneath every frame, but are tightly harnessed in a style of understatement and magician's legerdemain.
The handsomeness of the leads, Eva Marie Saint and Cary Grant (absolutely great in this), lends significantly to the air of elegantly effective stylishness. Yet they are never merely pretty faces, and are developed into rounded, if distant, characters whose weaknesses, intelligence, and desires contribute to the visceral excitement of the chase.
