Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
One of the best movies ever! Roger O. Thornhill (Grant) is one day mistaken for being a spy by a group of enemy agents. When they send him off drunk and drugged in a car, the police end up chasing him.
When things cant get any worse, the cops don't believe him, and when he attempts to show them what happened, no evidence lives up to it. And then to make matters even WORSE, Roger is accused of murder.
Now wanted for being a spy, a drunk-driver, and a murderer, Thornhill's life cant get any worse, but when he meets the sexy Eve Kendall (Saint) on a train, that's really where the journey begins.
Hitchcock is his best here, and there is literally no reason not to like this movie. Hitch's awesome sense of humor really shines in this, hence having Roger provide the most laughs of all the wrong men.
Eve Kendall is better than all the Bond women combined, providing a smart, gorgeous, believable character and Eva Marie Saint deserves a round of applause. Cary Grant has one of his best roles (and one of his last) in "North By Northwest", and the iconic crop duster scene is seriously like watching Grant being chased.
And don't ever forget the iconic score of this, because honestly, it could be the best of all of the Alfred Hitchcock themes of them all. "North By Northwest" is an incredible movie, and you'll really miss out if you don't see it.
