Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Mike M — 03 Sep 2012
Cary Grant's persona takes centre stage in this Hitchcock classic, frankly, unlike any other actor in a Hitchcock work. As a result, while the tension and suspense are omnipresence (as to be expected) Grant's screen presence overshadows the narrative at times.
Sometimes hammy, sometimes bordering on outright comedy, Grant's performance upstages nearly everything else sharing the screen with him. Still, North by Northwest is a crackin' good film, a spy thriller with unexpected twists and turns that climaxes high atop Mount Rushmore.
Look for a young Martin Landau, as well as a James Mason (both of whom, are excellent).
