Review of North by Northwest (1959) by Sidney S — 18 Jul 2013
Another edge of your seat thriller from the master of suspense! Alfred Hitchcock creates another landmark and classic movie in North By Northwest, when an advertising executive is mistaken for a spy he is on the run and engaging in a battle of wits with a crime syndicate on the hunt for a microfilm. Once again teaming with star Cary Grant he is charismatic and intelligent in the role, one that was perfectly suited for him. Eva Marie Saint is the temptress, seductive but also not what she seems.
This film is very well structured and from start to finish is without a doubt a thrill ride. This film's incorporation of espionage tactics no doubt influenced various spy movies in the years to come specifically the early Sean Connery James Bond films. The film has many plot twists and turns that will surprise you for real. It is constantly moving and builds to an awesome climax.
This film is still one of the definitive thrillers known for its iconic scene with the crop duster air plane and Mount Rushmore. Hitchcock knows how to deliver suspense in his films with its awesome music, camera work and buildup with a great screenplay by Ernest Lehman. The cat and mouse game between Thornhill (Grant) and his would-be assassins is very well filmed, and edge of your seat fun.
North By Northwest is dark, deceptive and a very engaging film. A timeless classic on all levels and without a doubt Hitchcock's most entertaining film.
