Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Ian G — 05 Jan 2017
Tom Ford is still a relative neophyte coming to directing films with this being only his second entry as a director, but he has certainly garnered a bevy of riches when it comes to acting even with the most skimpy of parts, with Adams, Shannon and Gyllenhaal in the leads, Harmer, Sheen and Laura Linney as well rounding out the cast in minimal scenes.
But the film itself seems to be an attempt at a stylish, fashion inspired David Lynch film taking that film within a film structure, in this case the inner narrative being the book that Jakes character writes to show up Amy Adams with that he is not a failure, and most of the characters being just empty shells just happening to be wandering around the proceedings.
The film itself has a great esthetic as one would expect given Ford's background, having a solid sheen and been paced artfully, but the lack of any kind of heart in the proceedings defintely doesnt help to bring in the audience to connect or relate to the audience in any decernable way.
Disappointing Oscar bait and heres hoping Amy Adams gets more attention for Arrival.
