Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Tommy M — 07 Feb 2017
Tom Ford's new film, Nocturnal Animals, about revenge & damaged relationships, is one of the most stylish films of the year. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal & Amy Adams in one of their best performances have a rocky relationship to say the least & when he wants to be a successful writer, she doesn't believe in him & is unhappy.
So she leaves him for another man (Armie Hammer). Jakes character sends her a newly written novel of his which metaphorically plays out their relationship through the time they spent together. He dedicates the book to her as a reminder of how awful she truly was towards him & to make her understand she'll never have a good life after what she did to him (cheated with another man, aborted his baby).
All in all the performances are strong from all of the cast including Michael Shannon (who is one of the strongest actors today) & Aaron Taylor Johnson (who will most likely see his name nominated for this film) who play supporting characters in the book written by Jake.
Tom Ford has a very good sense of stylish direction that pushes this film to be better than it actually is & if not for the sudden ending I would've given this film 4, maybe 4 & a half stars.
Absolutely worth watching & wouldn't be surprised at all come around Oscar time, that this film will be nominated for Best Picture.
