Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Scott W — 13 Nov 2017
This movie starts on a very strange note and you think "what have I gotten myself into?" But it turns into a very compelling movie that gets better as it goes on. I was interested more in the novel story than the real-life one.
The interplay between Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon is fantastic. I like how the filmmakers differentiate between the grittiness of the Texas story and the sterile atmosphere of Amy Adams' house.
It's a minor detail, but I thought they did a great job of aging Amy Adams. The difference between the present-day scenes and the flashbacks was striking in how much she looked worn down by life. And that ending! Every now and then I don't mind an open-ended finish.
