A film within a film, each component visually striking, stark, foreboding. The acting is outstanding, especially Amy Adams and Michael Shannon, and the direction is confident. It is a highly stylized film in which the viewer can feel as manipulated as the characters.
Cold, calculating, yet a totally satisfying experience.
