Review of Nobody Knows (2004) by Jesse L — 19 Feb 2005
(Theatre) (First Viewing, 1st Koreeda film).
NOBODY KNOWS is one of the rare films that managed to both entrance and annoy me. So many sections of the film are beautifully rendered- tender and dreamlike while still maintaining a hard-edged sense of reality, but by too much repetition, I lost interest (it could have been cut by a half hour or so). I really liked how Koreeda was able to capture that innocent glow of childhood (where the grave reality of the children's situation that seems obvious to us adults never occurs to the four children), and as far as child acting goes, it's certainly above the ordinary (though I'm not quite sure what the Cannes jury saw in Yûya Yagira's performance to give him their top acting honor).
I certainly wouldn't not recommend NOBODY KNOWS to anybody interested, as it's good elements outweigh any misgivings I might have, but it certainly isn't a film without its flaws.
