Review of No Country for Old Men (2007) by George E — 29 Dec 2014
There are films that you see once and never need to see again. Then there are films that merit watching a second or third time. Then there's No Country for Old Men. You could teach an entire class about this film.
The controversial ending forces you to think about the multitude of messages the movie tries to communicate rather than the intense and suspenseful plot itself. It's hard to discuss this film without any spoilers, but just know that to fully understand and appreciate everything that is going on you must pay attention to the relationship between what different characters say and how they act, rather than the (eventually revealed) facade of violence that envelopes the majority of the movie.
And even then, the violence itself is important. This is probably one of the most intelligently put-together movies ever made, and its genius lies in that everyone can come away with a unique message that isn't necessarily wrong or right.
