Review of No Country for Old Men (2007) by Do You Even Jay C — 12 Aug 2013
Some people say the Coens struck gold with Fargo. I say they didn't. But here, they did. NCFOM is a different type of Coen film. It's dark, slowly paced, and much tenser. The film follows Josh Brolin as he is caught up in a dangerous world when he stumbles onto the site of a botched drug deal. He soon finds money and from then on it gets intense. Javier Bardem plays Anton Chigurh, a sociopath who wants his money. And Tommy Lee Jones plays a cop searching for Brolin.
This film has an amazing cast from Woodey Harrelson to Kelly McDonald. But Bardem steals the show every scene he's in. He is dark, yet calm and he'll fuck you up without remorse. Harrelson comes in second as he is a great actor. Jones is fourth. Brolin is last. Not to diss Brolin, but he is up against a well rounded cast.
The dialogue in this film is outstanding. It's as if Tarantino wrote a script that was darker than his films (which are comedies). Every conversation is nicely delivered and is well written.
I recommend this film.
