Review of No (2012) by Paul K — 11 Feb 2013
Well worth a look. We went to the cinema, unusually, to see it. It's constrained by its need to tell a true story, and does well to create a cinematic narrative out of the history. Gael Garcia Bernal is excellent, as always, in the lead role - and the political historical tale is told from his perspective and his private life forms a secondary narrative that gives heart to a dry tale.
It's a bit drawn out and doesn't follow a simple line, because of this 'true story' provenance, and the subtitles are less than helpful sometimes. I also had some issues with understanding the cultural context, and how people lived under a murderous dictatorship while working to oppose it, and yet survived day to day.
No chance of a spoiler here: it was comforting to know the outcome from the beginning.
