Review of No (2012) by Chandni S — 09 Mar 2013
NO is a unique film. The 'No' campaign ads were completely defying the general logic that a). 'No' ads would/could not be made, b). that no-one would ever see those ads, c). 'No' ads would obviously disparage the dictatorial Govt, d).
'Yes' campaign would win under all circumstances. These 'No' ads turned out be to astonishingly joyful. 'No' ad instilled hope. Clearly the goal of the movie was to cover the difficulties in making the ads and the success of the 'No' campaign itself; not necessarily the political misdoings of the Govt and not René Saavedra's understanding of socialism.
But I feel it is alright for movies to focus on a slightly offbeat matter related to but not of the main subject itself. Such movies can be more impactful and thought provoking sometimes. I personally quite enjoyed the old-style movie making due to which I will forever think of the setting of the story in the era of its occurrence.
