Review of Nixon (1995) by George C — 12 Nov 2008
Rather than try to make this a liberal point a view on a notoriously hated conservative, Stone plays against expectations and instead turns Nixon's story into a modern Greek tragedy, a man who was so close to greatness and was then crippled by his own corruption when it was within his grasp.
By no means does this film make Nixon admirable, but it does succeed in making him sympathetic, and human. Hopkins is terrific as Nixon; even though he doesn't sound like him, the humanity of Nixon is readily present.
And Joan Allen delivered probably my favorite performance in the film as the long-suffering and exasperated Pat Nixon.
