Review of Ninotchka (1939) by James P — 02 Aug 2007
From Garbo's entrance as the hilariously deadpan, no-nonsense Soviet to the final scene, Garbo, even decades later, maintains her allure and mythical Garbo mystique. The memorable scene where "Garbo Laughs" is played to perfection by the star.
It saddens me to think that this is her only comedy. Ernest Lubitsch give his famous "Lubitsch touch" in bringing the comedy to this film. It doesn't hurt that it's scripted by the genius that is Billy Wilder and writing partner Charles Brackett.
This movie also plays as an interesting look into Western culture's view of Communism on the brink of World War II.
