Review of Ninotchka (1939) by Jamie T — 03 Mar 2013
In one word, beautiful.
With exquisite direction from Ernst Lubitsch, brilliant sequences, composition and choice of movement, making the smallest event or action as grand. The pacing was most interesting, for the more the character's relationships grew, so did my relationship with the film, you fall inlove in the same time as they do.
Walter Reisch's, Charles Brackett's Billy Wilder's script is flawless; when there is humour it is hysterical, when there is elements and tones of more serious matters, it is taken that way, furthermore; when there is chemistry it is the best chemistry I have ever seen between two actors in my opinion, between Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. The overall cast is the cream of the crop.
Why are there not any films like this anymore? This film puts romantic comedies of the 21st century to shame.
This is a new favourite of mine.
Five Stars.
