Review of Ninotchka (1939) by David L — 24 Nov 2013
Charming, hilarious and warm, Ninotchka also benefits from an outstanding performance from always superb Garbo. It is wonderfully acted and beautifully romantic, but what sets it apart from the rest of the rom-com pack is its humor.
The three Russians, Garbo and the parody on Communist Russia are all examples of smart humor with a lion's share of laugh out loud moments. And that says something given that even the best romantic comedies never live up to their genre name - being both romantic and comedic.
But Ninotchka does achieve that; it is a true classic, one of the best genre films ever and it is a further proof how phenomenal a year 1939 was and that it is arguably the best year in film ever.
