Review of Nine (2009) by Nikolai E — 20 Jul 2010
It was a surprise when this film didn't turn out to be the early Oscar juggernaut everyone was hoping it'd be, but now I can't understand how anyone could have thought it'd be any good at all.
You can't just take a brilliant classic of world cinema, add musical numbers, and call it a day. The film seems to be based on the most surface-level reading of a very complex and layered work, so right there you lose most of the value of the original, but they didn't make up for it by tightening up the plot or concentrating on a theme.
The story just lies there on the screen, with no particular reason for the scenes to be ordered one way or another. I think the cast does a decent job, even Day-Lewis for what it's worth, and the music is okay, but the pointlessness of this project is overwhelming, and the technicians and artists involved should be proud it's at least as watchable as it is.
