Review of Nine (2009) by Robert T — 13 Feb 2011

I do not consider myself a huge fan of musicals, but I was curious what this film had to offer. Big mistake! The film was very, very uninspiring, confusing and sadly for most of the cast their singing ability was not that riveting! I kind of already knew the film was going to be bad or just not that interesting 10-minutes into watching it.

Day-Lewis' character did not grab me, and honestly, he was actually annoying and somewhat obnoxious throughout the whole film. He kept whining, and why would I want to watch someone whine for two-hours? He was fine in other films, but believing he was a famous Italian filmmaker director in this film was a little too hard to imagine.

As the film progresses, the film introduced several important female characters. While some were interesting, others were just lacking. Why were there so much female characters in this film, and why do each of them had to sing? One problem I had with the film was the musical sequences.

Why do they have to be so oddly edited into the film. The flow of the film was off and having these random musical sequences made the film so long and confusing. In addition, none of the songs were that memorable.

To me, songs should be memorable and have a good jingle so we could hum parts of the songs afterward. This film didn't have either. None of the songs were interesting, and I actually thought some were just weird -- specially the song Marion Cotillard sand.

The lyrics were just awful. One thing I thought the film had was great art direction and cinematography. Other than that, the film feel a little flat for me. Oddly how this film was so over-hyped by some news outlets that after the film was released, the hype stopped.
