Review of Nine (2009) by Jenny N — 11 Nov 2011
"I'll be here waiting for you. With my legs open."said Penelope Cruz. This line caught my eye, turn out, it's the only best pcs of work that I ever found in this movie when I walked out the cinema.
How this film garnered no less than 5 Golden Globe nominations including Best Motion Picture is a complete mystery.
This movie is a sad, sad, sad remake.
And this is, easily, becomes one of the worst musical type movie I've ever seen.
As a musical, clearly those songs are not good enough to impress people.
As a story, it has nth but an extremely weak storyline.
The whole movie is about a director, Guido Contini, who used to be very talented, but now he run out all of his idea and luck and found himself in a midlife crisis. In order to forget about all this, all the women he knows become the instrument of helping him escape from the reality.
Those women are his late mother (Sofia Loren), his wife Marion Cotillard, his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his costume designer and closest friend (Judi Dench), a fashion reporter (Kate Hudson), a childhood temptress Saraghina (Stacey "Fergie" Ferguson) and his muse (Nicole Kidman).
Musically, the only good song performance was Kate Hudson's. She sings and dances well and it maybe the only Oscar material in this movie.
So, this movie is constituted by Guido imagination and Rob Marshall should probably change the name from "Nine" to " The imaginarium of a not so talented director".
