Review of Nine (2009) by Tim D — 04 Dec 2011
A musical without good music is doomed to failure, and such was the case here. Nine also suffered from a story that didn't seem to take itself seriously, at least not until the very end. If the entire film had been like the final 15 minutes (with a new soundtrack to boot), we might have had another Chicago, but alas, 'twas not to be.
The film was boring, fleeting, disengaging, and jumpy, managing to go on too long while also not giving each arc the time it needed, and deserved. Also, for a film about a man's encounters with women, and how said encounters affect his life, Nine was noticeably unsexy, perhaps lacking the aggression needed to ignite passion in the viewer.
Truly this film was a colossal failure, managing to do almost nothing right, but th4e cast can't be faulted, and flashes of potential WERE there! They simply were not realized.
